Stewart Schwartz has served as the Executive Director for the Coalition for Smarter Growth since its founding in 1997. Stewart is responsible for the strategic direction of the Coalition and serves as the primary spokesperson for smart growth issues in the region. Under his leadership, the Coalition has grown to a ten-person staff, created partnerships with non-profits, civic groups, business and government and become the region's leading smart growth organization. Stewart also serves as an advisor to local campaigns throughout Virginia and Maryland on issues ranging from grassroots organizing to smart growth alternatives.
Stewart represents the Coalition on the Smart Growth Alliance, which includes leading business and development leaders. The Washington Business Journal recognized him as one of six Businesspersons of the Year in 2002. An attorney with experience in environmental, land use, and transportation law, Stewart has worked for the President's Council on Sustainable Development, Land Trust Alliance, and Southern Environmental Law Center. He is a 24-year veteran of active and reserve service in the U.S. Navy, and earned a B.A. and J.D. from the University of Virginia and an M.A. from Georgetown. He is a member of the Virginia Bar Association and lives in Alexandria.
