Walking, bicycling and riding transit must be practical and safe options for growing communities in the suburbs. Montgomery County's revision of its Road Code, which guides how streets are built and maintained, is an opportunity to ensure that streets are safe for all users. In 2007, the County Council adopted a new Road Code law and asked the County Executive to develop the details for implementation.
The new Road Code offers a "complete and green streets" policy objective - where streets are designed for the safety and comfort of all users, including walkers and bicyclists. The policy also aims to reduce stormwater pollution rushing into nearby streams and rivers. CSG is working with our partners to ensure effective implementation.
The Coalition for Smarter Growth submitted comments with the Audubon Naturalist Society on the proposed changes to the road code on Sept. 30, 2008. On Dec. 9, 2008, the Montgomery County Council unanimously approved road design legislation. You can read their press release for more details.
