A Region Divided

Take Action: on current issues that fuel the imbalance between east and west in the region such as proposals for the Intercounty Connector, a new toll road that would draw economic development to Montgomery's I-270 corridor at the expense of Prince George's County.  Contact your State Delegates & Senators to voice your opposition to the ICC or write a letter to the editor.

All of the jurisdictions in the region, no matter what their social or economic condition, are linked…. If our regional divisions widen as growth proceeds, it will be difficult if not impossible, to create a region that is competitive, prosperous and livable.

--A Region Divided

Our region is a region divided. There are divisions along east and west, divisions among different races and divisions along income levels and economic situations. The "Region Divided" report by the Brookings Institute details this increasing economic and social divide. Growth, jobs, and services are concentrated in the western half of our region, while the eastern half is lacking in many of these areas. The report points to the dangers of this imbalance and provides suggestions for improvement.
