Transit

Take Action: Contact your local elected officials and write a letter to the editor asking for an increase in funding to expand and improve the public transit system.

Update:

Transit refers to public transportation including bus, light rail, heavy rail, commuter rail, monorail, and Bus Rapid Transit (BRT). There are many environmental, social and economic benefits from using transit and demand for public transit is growing around the country.

Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia are serviced by public transportation systems managed by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA). The extensive transit system includes Metrorail and Metrobus, commuter trains (MARC and VRE), and local bus lines. Click here to see a map of the Metro stations in the DC area. Two additional transit projects currently being discussed are the Inner Purple Line (MD) and Dulles Rail (VA).

All three jurisdictions contribute to WMATA's funding. Maryland and Virginia also have state agencies that provide transit alternatives: the Maryland Transit Administration and the Virginia Transit Association.

Whether in urban centers or suburban neighborhoods, creating transit-oriented development at a scale suited to the community makes transit practical and convenient. This is crucial for the success of transit and for reducing traffic congestion throughout the region.
