Community Clips Smart Growth News for the Washington, DC Region September 28, 2005 In this issue:
From the Executive Director With our country’s finances stretched thin – by two hurricanes, expanded military spending, health care, social security, and education needs – there is talk of cutting funding from the recently passed federal transportation law. Without the promise of billions in additional transportation funding, now more than ever our region needs to maximize our existing investment in transportation. Many local officials are seeking to support better use of our infrastructure in ways that will reduce traffic and provide the public more transportation choices. Proposed walkable communities in Tysons Corner and at Vienna, Shady Grove, Twinbrook and West Hyattsville Metro stations represent promising advances in smart growth development. With proposals for far-flung developments, defense facilities seeking to leave transit, and questionable transportation projects surfacing every day, however, the Coalition has much work still to do. With the support of involved citizens like you, we can continue to push for the best use of our region’s transportation infrastructure and for better community designs that provide more transportation choices. Thank you for staying involved. Fall Festival to Celebrate 25th Anniversary of Agricultural Reserve Hayrides and a bonfire -- it must be autumn!
