From the Executive Director

With our country’s finances stretched thin – by two hurricanes, expanded military spending, health care, social security, and education needs – there is talk of cutting funding from the recently passed federal transportation law. Without the promise of billions in additional transportation funding, now more than ever our region needs to maximize our existing investment in transportation.

Many local officials are seeking to support better use of our infrastructure in ways that will reduce traffic and provide the public more transportation choices. Proposed walkable communities in Tysons Corner and at Vienna, Shady Grove, Twinbrook and West Hyattsville Metro stations represent promising advances in smart growth development. With proposals for far-flung developments, defense facilities seeking to leave transit, and questionable transportation projects surfacing every day, however, the Coalition has much work still to do. With the support of involved citizens like you, we can continue to push for the best use of our region’s transportation infrastructure and for better community designs that provide more transportation choices. Thank you for staying involved.

Fall Festival to Celebrate 25th Anniversary of Agricultural Reserve

Hayrides and a bonfire -- it must be autumn! Come join the festivities celebrating the 25th Anniversary of Maryland's Agricultural Reserve, which provides local produce, recreation, economic benefits and environmental protection for the County's suburban residents. The festival fun starts at 4:00 pm on Saturday, October 8 at Butler's Orchard in Germantown, Maryland. Jump in the hayloft, wind your way through the pumpkin maze, enjoy live music, and more. Visit www.ruralmontgomery.org to learn more. Hope to see you there!

Area Schools Participate in International Walk to School Week

What better way to teach children about the benefits of walkable communities, physical activity, and clean air than to walk them to school? Schools from around the world -- and some in our own communities -- are participating in the International Walk to School week, October 4-7. Learn more, including which schools in our area are participating.

DC to Host Public Markets Conference

Project for Public Spaces is hosting its sixth annual Public Markets Conference in DC October 28-31. Markets are making a great comeback, offering good nutrition and food security to low-income neighborhoods, enhancing public spaces, and helping to preserve rural land for farms. This conference promises to help Washington and Baltimore shape the future of our public markets. Learn more.

Volunteer Opportunities at the Coalition

As the Coalition ratchets into even higher gear for the fall, we find ourselves with some great volunteer projects we could use help with. Are you a database geek, who thrives on streamlining databases and revels in the glory of being eternally appreciated? Prepare to revel. Do you enjoy mindless mailing parties where you get to eat pizza, network with cool people, and learn about work in the smart growth community? Tell us your favorite toppings! Have a knack for cleaning out messy closets? Have we got a messy closet for you. Whatever your skill, whim, talent or desire -- if you're interested in sharing the bounty that is you, we would love to hear from you. To find that perfect opportunity to share your talents, contact Kyle Walton at (202) 244-4408 extension 0# or email him at volunteer@smartergrowth.net.
