Gov-Elect Kaine to Hold Town Hall Meeting in Manassas Nov 29 Governor-Elect Tim Kaine is holding a series of Town Hall meetings across Virginia to elicit ideas from citizens on how to address transportation and growth issues. Kaine has indicated through speeches and his website that he recognizes the need for significant change. On his website he states, “Virginia’s transportation system is in crisis – a crisis that will require new thinking and a comprehensive vision.... We will never solve Virginia’s complex transportation problems with old approaches. Simply trying to tax and pave our way out of traffic won’t work. ” Join Governor-Elect Kaine in Manassas on Tuesday, November 29. Learn more, including how you can take action. WMATA Board Agrees to Sell Vienna Metro Parcel In a victory for advocates of transit-oriented development, the WMATA board of directors voted to sell a parcel of land at Vienna Metro to Pulte Homes, enabling the developer to link its proposed project to the transit station. Our thanks go to the many Coalition supporters who attended the November 1 hearing at Oakton High School and to those who wrote the WMATA board in favor of the project. Hearing on Proposed West Hyattsville Liquefied Natural Gas Plant The proposal by Washington Gas to construct a Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) processing and storage plant next to the West Hyattsville Metro Station goes before Prince George’s County’s Zoning Hearing Examiner on December 7th. Not only would the storage of liquefied natural gas be hazardous to nearby residents, it would interfere with the excellent transit station redevelopment plan for the West Hyattsville Metro station. The Planning Board has recommended denial of the proposal, but the approval process continues. In addition to the hearing, residents are organizing a rally on Saturday, December 3rd at Washington Gas’ property, 2130 Chillum Road, Hyattsville. Join them at 10:30 am. Virginia Tri-County Parkway Route Approved The Commonwealth Transportation Board (CTB) approved a route for a new highway that would run west of Manassas National Battlefield Park. According to Coalition Executive Director Stewart Schwartz, such decisions "symbolize everything that's still wrong with the Virginia Department of Transportation. They've got nothing to do with traffic relief and everything to do with opening new land to development." While the CTB approved this first link in the outer beltway, questions and hurdles still exist, including financing. Learn more in the Washington Post's "Approved Route for Va. Outer-County Parkway Meets With Some Opposition." Upcoming Events
