Vote Tuesday, November 7! The media coverage has focused mostly on a couple of big races in Maryland and Virginia, but remember that every office is important. Across the region every vote counts. While they may not get the spotlight, local offices, including county councils and even DC's Advisory Neighborhood Commissions, make decisions that shape our communities, so please take time to vote on Tuesday. In Maryland, ensure that a Governor can't sell preserved state park, conservation or recreational land without approval from the General Assembly by voting YES to Question #1. Liquefied Natural Gas Plant Nixed at Metro Station We congratulate the Prince George's County Council for taking the final step to block a proposed liquefied natural gas (LNG) facility adjacent to the West Hyattsville Metro station. Relief resounded from residents and regional groups who adamantly opposed the proposed facility because of safety concerns and because the LNG plant would destroy plans for transit-oriented re-development in the area. Ward 3 Vision Website Launched Ward 3 Vision is an active group of residents in Northwest DC’s Ward 3 partnering with the Coalition for Smarter Growth to ensure that new development is positive and forward-thinking and brings new life and vibrancy to our neighborhoods. We believe our community will benefit from an honest dialog with true inclusiveness and citizen engagement. VDOT: Gridlock for Loudoun, Fairfax, Prince William If Loudoun County Board approves 26,000 - 33,000 new houses as proposed, gridlock will result not only in that county, but in neighboring counties as well, according to another analysis by the Virginia Department of Transportation. These points were highlighted by three state officials and hundreds of citizens at the recent public hearings on this proposals. Smart Growth Alliance Announces Top Green Spaces to Protect In recognizing that smart growth and land conservation go hand-in-hand, the Washington Smart Growth Alliance has announced its list of crucial conservation projects across the region. This list highlights some of the places the region should not grow. Projects chosen range from the Journey Through Hallowed Ground, which encompasses land from Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia, to an Anacostia Watershed protection strategy. Community Design Consultants Selected for Tysons Redesign With many top national firms to choose from, Fairfax leaders selected PB Placemaking, the group that also did the remarkable West Hyattsville Transit District Plan, to lead a design plan for reimagining Tysons Corner. With a key focus of integrating land use and transportation, the team will engage the public in determining alternatives for the future of Tysons. With the right design, Fairfax can create a Tysons Corner with real transportation choices, a place where people can safely walk, bike, take transit or drive where they need to go.
