Excerpt from Virginians Want Limits on Growth, Poll Shows
Washington Post, January 7, 1999

"Seven out of 10 Virginians said they favor controlling growth instead of building more roads as a way of improving transportation, the poll said, and 53% agreed that the pace of development should be managed to prevent crowded schools and budget trouble for local governments.

Northern Virginian were most adamant in their support of growth controls: Nine out of 10 ranked traffic congestion as a serious or very serious problem; nearly 60 percent said the same about school crowding and loss of open space; and a slim majority approved a tax increase to raise money to preserve farms, parks and woodlands."

"The poll...found no significant difference between Democrats and Republicans in their views on sprawl-related issues."

Poll conducted by Virginia Commonwealth University Center for Public Policy and funded by Virginia Environmental Endowment.
