6-Year Plan
With two million more
people coming to our region, the only way that we can reduce traffic and
save open space is to provide transportation choices by linking walkable
communities to transit.
-
Support shifting
funding to more transit, fixing local road bottlenecks, and providing
more pedestrian and bicycle routes. Support rail to Tysons Corner
and transit investments (rail, bus-rapid transit, and bus) that are
linked to walkable communities.
-
Oppose projects
that do not relieve congestion, but open up more land to scattered
development: oppose the Tri-County Parkway (Battlefield Bypass)/234
Bypass and Techway (proposed Potomac Bridge crossing).
-
Support fixing
I-66 outside the Beltway as a much higher priority than new bypasses.
Fixes should include HOV lanes, extension of VRE to Haymarket and
planning to extend Metrorail to Centreville.
-
Oppose widening
I-66 inside the Beltway which could cost up to $400 million yet only
move the bottleneck to Rosslyn and DC. Ask for consideration of HOV,
HOT lane, express bus and Dulles Rail as better alternatives. Losing
the right of way on I-66 would mean that we can’t later build
an express track for the Orange Line and Dulles Rail.
-
Oppose the I-95
and Beltway HOT lanes (12-lane beltway) until they’ve analyzed
the impact on HOV/Slug system and on traffic on intersecting local
roads like Route 7.
-
Support making
I-95 passenger and freight rail a top state priority, to prevent complete
meltdown of I-95.
