We won a future of more homes in the right places – Chevy Chase and U Street!

Thanks to advocates like you, the DC Zoning Commission made the right decision on July 11 and approved rezoning proposals to add substantially more housing capacity in two sought-after locations in DC: U Street police and fire stations site, and the Chevy Chase civic core and Connecticut Avenue main street below the circle.

Thanks again to everyone who took action – your testimony mattered to the Zoning Commission. This is an important victory for a more inclusive city!

What did we win?

  • Potential for 100-200 affordable homes at the Chevy Chase civic core
  • Potential for more than 100 affordable homes at the U Street police station site plus additional market rate housing
  • Rental housing affordable at 30% and 50% Median Family Income — deeply affordable
  • Dedicated affordable homes where none exist today
  • New affordable homes in affluent and well-connected neighborhoods
  • Replacement of aging public facilities – a new library, community center, police station, and fire station
  • Chevy Chase design-based zoning that enhances walkability and architectural compatibility in new development
  • Zoning for a U Street building that includes a public plaza and potential for additional public uses

What’s next?

  • The Chevy Chase rezoning decision will be posted for a 30-day comment period before final action — so we need to express our support when the decision is published!
  • Chevy Chase civic core site Request for Proposals (RFP) are due on August 28
  • U Street RFP has not been issued but will be in the near future
  • In both cases, these RFPs will provide many more opportunities for public input – so stay engaged!
  • Lawsuits by opponents. We’ll keep track of those, and hope they are cleared up quickly

Thanks again for voicing your support for a more inclusive, affordable, and accessible city. This is a big victory that we should be proud of.
